Jie Hyue Kim

Dr. Jie Hyue Kim, D.M.A., is an accomplished violinist, violist, educator, and arts leader whose career bridges international performance and dedicated pedagogy. A native of Daejeon, South Korea, Dr. Kim was born into a musical family and began studying the violin at the age of eight. From her earliest years, she demonstrated both technical facility and artistic sensitivity, qualities that would shape her lifelong commitment to musical excellence.

Dr. Kim earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of America, where she was awarded a full scholarship fellowship. In addition to her performance studies, she served as a teaching assistant in the music theory department, further refining her academic and analytical expertise. Her doctoral work reflects not only a high level of artistic achievement but also a deep intellectual engagement with music. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Chung Nam National University in South Korea and a Master of Arts degree from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, City University of New York. At Queens College, she studied with Daniel Phillips, the internationally renowned violinist of the Orion Quartet, whose mentorship profoundly influenced her musical development.

Throughout her academic career, Dr. Kim distinguished herself as both a leader and performer. She served as concertmaster of university symphony and chamber orchestras, demonstrating poise, musical authority, and collaborative strength. While at Queens College, she won the Queens College Orchestra Concerto Competition and performed as soloist with the orchestra in 2009. In addition to her work as a violinist, she has excelled as a violist, serving as principal viola of the Queens College Orchestra and the Ureuk Symphony Orchestra in New York.

As an orchestral musician, Dr. Kim has performed in some of the nation’s most prestigious venues, including Merkin Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Her orchestral career has been marked by versatility and depth, allowing her to perform a broad repertoire spanning classical masterworks to contemporary compositions. She currently serves as Second Principal Violin of the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra in Virginia, where she continues to contribute her artistry and leadership to the ensemble.

Dr. Kim’s accomplishments as a soloist further underscore her distinguished career. She has been invited to perform with the NOVA Philharmonic, the Queensboro Symphony Orchestra in New York, the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, and the Charles Washington Symphony Orchestra in Virginia. Her festival appearances include participation in the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria, where she was awarded a full fellowship, as well as Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival. She was also selected to perform with the Castleton Festival Orchestra, a distinguished ensemble hand-selected and directed by the late Maestro Lorin Maazel—an honor of significant artistic recognition.

A passionate chamber musician, Dr. Kim is a founding member of the Eclat Trio. In 2015, the trio won First Prize in the American Protégé International Competition, leading to a celebrated debut performance at Carnegie Hall. This achievement marked a significant milestone in her chamber music career and reflected her dedication to refined ensemble collaboration and expressive performance.

Equally devoted to teaching, Dr. Kim is an expert educator with over a decade of experience instructing violin and viola students of all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced pre-professional musicians. She has taught in both private and group settings, fostering technical mastery, musical understanding, and artistic confidence in her students. Many of her students have been selected for premier youth orchestras in the greater Washington, D.C. area, including the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras and the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. Her students have also successfully auditioned for Virginia District, Regional, and All-State orchestras, reflecting her ability to guide young musicians toward high achievement.

Dr. Kim currently serves on the faculty of Loudoun Country Day School in Leesburg, Virginia, where she inspires students through comprehensive and engaging music instruction. She also holds a position as Lecturer at Midwest University, continuing her commitment to higher education and mentorship.
