Concert Notes
The NSS invites audiences throughout the Washington, DC and Maryland region to experience an extraordinary concert celebrating the richness and diversity of African classical music. African Suites features two remarkable works: African Suite by South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim and African Suite by Nigerian composer Olufela (Fela) Sowande. This unique performance showcases the beauty of the string orchestra while introducing audiences to two of Africa's most influential musical voices.
Abdullah Ibrahim is internationally recognized for blending jazz, African musical traditions, and classical influences into a deeply personal musical language. His African Suite, orchestrated for string orchestra by Daniel Schnyder, transforms his memorable melodies into lush orchestral landscapes filled with warmth, lyricism, and rhythmic vitality. The work captures moments of quiet reflection, joyful celebration, and spiritual contemplation, creating an unforgettable concert experience for both classical music enthusiasts and jazz lovers alike.
Complementing Ibrahim's work is the pioneering African Suite by Olufela "Fela" Sowande, widely regarded as the father of modern Nigerian classical music. Sowande's five-movement suite combines traditional West African folk melodies with the elegance of the classical string orchestra. Rich in dance rhythms, expressive melodies, and colorful orchestration, the music celebrates African heritage while demonstrating that African musical traditions stand proudly alongside the world's great orchestral repertoire.
Although both works share the same title, they offer distinctly different perspectives on African musical culture. Sowande writes from the classical tradition, weaving authentic African melodies into sophisticated orchestral forms. Ibrahim approaches composition through jazz, allowing improvisation, lyrical piano writing, and African rhythms to blend seamlessly with the expressive sound of the string orchestra. Together, these masterworks illustrate the incredible diversity, creativity, and artistic depth found throughout the African continent.
The NSS is committed to presenting engaging performances that celebrate composers from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. This concert continues that mission by highlighting music that expands the traditional orchestral repertoire while offering audiences new perspectives on classical music. Whether you are a lifelong concertgoer or attending your first orchestra performance, African Suites promises an inspiring afternoon of exceptional music.
